The island has a perimeter of about 35 km and the area around 2760 ha. The format is of a great eight , dividing into two well defined areas, south and north, connected by a narrow sandy strip. The island is connected to the city of Paranaguá, and its administration,  jurisdiction and protection is in charge by the Environmental Institute of Paraná - IAP and the Forestry Police Battalion of the Military Police of Paraná - BPFlo / PMPR.
Ilha do Mel separates the north of the Islands and parts of Superagüi channels and Southeast. To the south, it separates from Pontal do Sul Channel South or Galheta. The western part of the island is washed by the waters of the bay known locally for "Saco or Limoeiro Inside Sea ", with distinct dynamic behavior of the eastern side or "Mar de Fora".
The largest beach is Lighthouse Beach, 4 km from the hotel by the Morro do Farol de Conchas, followed by Praia do Forte, with 3.2 km from the hotel to the  Cassual River. The other beaches, we highlight the Outside Beach (Praia de Fora) and Praia Grande (Big Beach), both wanted for the practice of surfing, and Miguel Beach, heading for the southernmost area of the island .
The hills have little  altitudes, and the Morro Bento Alves and Miguel's are the highest points, with about 150m. The Conchas Lighthouse  Hill measures 50m, and the Morro do Joaquim (Joaquim Hill), between Praia de Fora and Praia Grande, 65m. In the southern area, the Hill of the Encantadas, where there are caves, measuring 68m in altitude.

In the sea from within the region of the "Saco do Limoeiro", is the Morro do Meio with 94m. The area north of the island, presents itself as a broad plain, where lies the Hill of the Whale with approximately 80 m, which is located in the Fortress of Our Lady of Delight (FIGUEIREDO, 1954).
There are four main villages: Nova Brasilia, Lighthouse (Farol), Fortress and Village of Encantadas in the south. The infrastructure of the island has electricity and running water from the source. There are 3 water reservoirs for the island, located in Morro Bento Alves. There are two health centers to serve the population, located in the village of Nova Brasília and Encantadas and two schools, only for basic literacy.
The island also has 3 headquarters of the Forestry Police (Encantadas, Brasília and Fortaleza) and 2 fixed posts at Brasilia and Encantadas). For the accommodation of tourists there are hostels and campsites.
Access to the island takes place by boat through the Resort (Balneario) of Pontal do Sul (takes about half an hour) or through the municipality of Paranaguá, longer voyage, that takes about an hour and a half with a slow boat. There are boats for both the southern part of the island called "Prainha" or "Encantadas" and to the northern part called "Brasilia".
